What exactly is La Tomatina?
Every year on the last Wednesday of August, trucks haul mountains of over-ripe tomatoes into Buñol's Plaza del Pueblo. At 12 noon a water cannon fires — and for exactly one hour, thousands of people from all over the world throw squashed tomatoes at each other until the streets literally run like tomato soup. A second cannon at 1 pm ends it. There's no deeper meaning; it's pure, organised chaos — and one of the most famous festivals on earth.
Since 2013 the town caps entry at 20,000 ticketed participants (Buñol itself has only ~9,000 residents). That cap is what makes tickets both mandatory and genuinely scarce.
Tickets: price, where to buy, and the honest truth
Option 1 — Official basic ticket (~€15)
The official entry ticket costs around €15 per person and is sold through the official website tomatina.es (run with Buñol's town hall). It covers entry to the fight zone only — no transport, no extras. Sales open in January–February, and 60–70% of tickets sell in the first three months; in recent years everything has been gone by May.
Option 2 — Tour packages (from ~€140)
Tour operators buy ticket allocations early and bundle them with transport and extras. Typical 2026 pricing:

Festival day: how it actually works
- Stay in Valencia, not Buñol — the town is tiny. Trains and festival coaches run to Buñol on the day.
- Arrive 7–9 am. By 11:30 only the back rows are left. The paloseco (greased pole with ham on top) entertainment comes first; the fight starts at the 12:00 cannon.
- Dress to be destroyed: old clothes, closed shoes with grip, goggles if you wear lenses. No backpacks, no hard bags, and don't bring your phone without a waterproof pouch — tomato acid kills electronics fast.
- The golden rule: squash the tomato before you throw it. Only throw tomatoes — nothing else.
- 1:00 pm cannon = stop instantly. Locals hose everyone down afterwards; it's part of the fun.
