Canada remains one of the top destinations for Pakistanis seeking permanent residency — and its flagship system, Express Entry, went through major changes in 2026. If you've been stuck below the CRS cut-off, the new category-based draws might be your realistic path. Here's the honest breakdown.

How Express Entry works

Express Entry manages applications for three main PR programs: the Federal Skilled Worker (FSW), Canadian Experience Class (CEC), and Federal Skilled Trades (FST). You create an online profile and get ranked using the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS), which awards points for age, education, work experience, and language ability. The highest-ranked candidates get Invitations to Apply (ITAs).

The big 2026 change: category-based draws

The general CRS cut-off is high (the Canadian Experience Class cut-off has been around 508). For many applicants, that's out of reach. The solution Canada expanded in 2026 is category-based selection — draws that target specific in-demand occupations, often at much lower CRS scores.

On 18 February 2026, IRCC announced the system now runs ten active occupational categories, five of them brand new. The new priority categories for 2026 include:

Existing categories like healthcare, skilled trades, education, and STEM continue.

Why this matters: In a category draw you're not competing against the whole pool — only others in your category. That's how IRCC can invite people at scores far below the general cut-off.

IRCC increased the minimum work experience for renewed categories from six months to one full year (gained in Canada or abroad over the previous three years). Make sure your experience meets this before counting on a category draw.

How to position yourself

  1. Check if your occupation falls into a 2026 priority category.
  2. Maximize your CRS — strong language scores (IELTS/CELPIP), education credentials assessment (ECA), and work experience all help.
  3. Improve your language test results — this is often the fastest way to gain points.
  4. Consider Canadian ties — many new categories favor those with Canadian work experience or a job offer.

Honest note

Express Entry is run entirely by the Canadian government through an online system — no agent can "guarantee" an invitation. Focus on building the strongest, most truthful profile you can, and aim for a category that matches your real skills.
