Germany did something rare: it created a visa that lets skilled non-EU workers come to look for a job without needing a job offer first. It's called the Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte), and it's one of the most talked-about routes for Pakistanis in 2026. Here's how it really works.

What is the Opportunity Card?

Governed by Section 20a of the German Residence Act, the Chancenkarte is a job-search residence permit. It lets qualified professionals enter Germany for up to one year to find work — addressing Germany's need for roughly 400,000 skilled workers a year. Unlike almost every other work route, you don't need an employer lined up before you arrive.

The points system

The Opportunity Card uses a points-based system. You earn points for factors like:

• Qualifications (recognized degree or vocational training)
• Work experience
• Language skills (German and/or English)
• Age
• Connection to Germany (previous stays, etc.)

Spouses or partners who also meet the requirements can apply jointly and receive an extra point.

Main requirements

• Financial proof: at least €1,091 per month for 2026 (€13,092 for a one-year stay). This can be shown through a blocked account (Sperrkonto), a sponsor's declaration, or a part-time work contract.
• Language: basic German A1 or English B2.
• Qualifications: a recognized degree or vocational qualification, plus enough points.

After you arrive

Once in Germany, register your residence at the local Residents' Registration Office (Bürgeramt) within the required timeframe. Then you have up to a year to find a job that matches your qualifications. Once you have a job offer, you switch to a proper work permit or EU Blue Card.

Why it's attractive

For skilled Pakistanis, the appeal is obvious: you can legally be in Germany, network, interview in person, and search — instead of trying to land a job from thousands of miles away. Being on the ground is a huge advantage.
